Our team of advanced practice clinicians or APCs, are comprised of emergency-trained physician assistants and nurse practitioners critical part of the team’s success. Working alongside physicians, our APCs contribute to our best-practice patient care environment. They provide expert care in emergency departments throughout the Twin Cities, rural and central Minnesota as well as in our three Urgency Room locations.

EPPA is nationally known for its commitment to providing high quality, emergency medical care. We’re looking for experienced, certified physician assistants or nurse practitioners with a passion for emergency medicine.

Our APCs serve as integral members of a multidisciplinary team providing excellence in emergency medical care in a variety of treatment areas including the Emergency Department, Fast Track, and The Urgency Room. In addition, the APC coordinates care with consultant services, recommends follow-up care, facilitates referral to various internal and external facilities and participates in multidisciplinary continuous quality improvement.

Our APC training program is undergoing new updates and advances to make it more accessible, inclusive and standardized.

After interviewing and surveying APCs, the APC leadership group is working on policy and scheduling changes focused on retention.

The APC manager and medical director will serve as advocates for APCs within EPPA leadership.

APC Training Program

We offer an APC-Training program to assist you as you transition into your new career as a clinician specialty of unscheduled emergent care.

After training, you will move to a full APC with the skillset to work in an emergency department and/or our Urgency Room unscheduled care facilities.

Our APC-T training program spans twelve months, following a meticulously crafted curriculum and hands-on learning to equip our clinicians with the comprehensive skill set essential for navigating the complexities of emergency care.

From understanding advanced diagnostic techniques to learning critical decision-making abilities under pressure, our APC-Ts emerge as providers capable of delivering top-tier care in the most demanding of situations. We have implemented comprehensive tools to ensure that our team is exposed to the core elements necessary to build their success in the emergency department.

Our emphasis on quality training and continuous professional development ensures that our graduates remain at the forefront of the ever-evolving landscape of emergency medicine.

Multiple Opportunities Available Across Minnesota

Key Result Areas

  • Examines patients and performs comprehensive physical examinations
  • Compiles patient medical data, including health history results of physical examination
  • Administers or orders diagnostic tests, like CT, x-ray, electrocardiogram and additionally laboratory tests and additionally interprets test results for deviations from normal
  • Performs therapeutic procedures, like injections, immunizations, suturing wound care, and also managing infection
  • Develops and implements patient management plans, records progress notes, and also assists in provision of continuity of care
  • Prescribes, administers, and dispenses drugs, controlled substances, and medical devices
  • Instructs and counsels patients regarding compliance with prescribed therapeutic regimens 
  • Creates and maintains appropriate patient records
  • Compassionately cares for and communicates with patients, family members, co-workers, and other medical professionals.

Education, Experience and Skills

  • Completion of an accredited physician assistant or nursing practitioner program
  • Current licensure with the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice or Minnesota Board of Nursing
  • Current ACLS and BLS certification
  • Two or more years of experience working as an APC in a tertiary, high-volume hospital emergency department in which the APC routinely performed typical emergency procedures such as suturing, splinting, wound care, fracture care, and lumbar punctures
  • Ability to efficiently and effectively manage multiple clinical tasks
  • Consistently demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills that result in effective information exchange with patients, patients’ families, physicians, professional associates, and other individuals within the system.
  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, responsibility, ethical practice, sensitivity to a diverse patient population, and adherence to legal and regulatory requirements. Professionalism that is the expression of positive values and ideals as care is delivered and commitment to ethical principles pertaining to provision or withholding of clinical care, confidentiality of patient information, informed consent, and business practices.
